Daily Self-Oil Massage / Abhyanga (traditional wellness practice)

For: not an illness but a time-honoured daily self-care practice - a warm-oil self-massage traditionally valued for calming the mind, easing everyday stiffness and dryness, warming the body and settling sleep

See a doctor if: New severe or one-sided pain or swelling, a hot tender area, a possible clot in a leg vein, a fresh injury, or skin that reacts to the oil - stop and see a doctor rather than massaging it.

Kitchen remedies

Warm (do not overheat) a suitable oil and massage it into the body before a warm bath - long strokes along the limbs, circles at the joints, clockwise on the belly, and a little on the scalp and soles of the feet. Sesame oil suits most people in cool weather; coconut oil is more cooling for hot weather or a warm constitution. Leave it on 10-20 minutes, then bathe warm. Traditional medicated oils (Bala, Mahanarayan, Ksheerabala) are used for specific needs.

Cautions

This is a wellness practice, not a treatment. Do the massage GENTLY - do not massage over a fresh injury, fracture, inflamed vein, skin infection, open wound or an area of new pain or swelling. Take care on wet, oily floors to avoid slips. Patch-test a new oil first; those with acne-prone skin or during heavy colds/indigestion should keep it light or skip.

Related remedies
