Travel Tummy / New-Place Digestive Upset in children

Signs: loose stools, tummy cramps or mild nausea after travel, eating out, or a change of water/place

Age: 1 year+ (babies with any loose stools/vomiting need a doctor)
Go to a doctor now if: Signs of dehydration (few wet nappies, no tears, sunken eyes, drowsiness), blood or mucus in the stool, high fever, persistent vomiting, severe tummy pain, or diarrhoea lasting beyond a couple of days - see a doctor. Babies need care sooner.

Food-first comfort

Hydration first, then gentle food: homemade ORS or coconut water in small frequent sips to replace fluids if stools are loose; plain, bland foods like rice, curd, banana, khichdi and dal water; curd/yoghurt to settle the gut; safe water only (boiled/bottled when travelling) and freshly cooked, hot food; avoid raw salads, cut fruit from outside, iced drinks and heavy/oily/spicy food until settled.

What to nourish

ORS/coconut water, rice, curd, banana, khichdi, dal water, safe boiled water; bland and fresh.

Never

Never give anti-diarrhoea 'stopper' medicines to children. Don't skip fluids - dehydration is the real danger. Don't give untreated/roadside water, ice or cut fruit from outside. No honey under 1 year.

Care at home

Travel tummy is usually short-lived and the priority is replacing fluids with ORS while eating bland foods. Safe water and freshly cooked hot food prevent most of it; watch hydration and seek care for blood, high fever or a young baby.
