Go to a doctor now if: Constipation in a baby under 6 weeks, blood in stool, severe tummy pain, vomiting, swollen belly, weight loss, or constipation with soiling/holding that persists — get medical advice.
Food-first comfort
More water; fruit purees — prune, pear, apple (with skin for older kids); soaked raisins/prunes water; whole fruits & vegetables; ragi/whole-grain porridge. Reduce excess milk, white rice, biscuits, and packaged snacks.
What to nourish
Fiber foods: papaya, oats, dal with skin, leafy vegetables, seasonal fruit; ensure enough fluids.
Never
No stimulant laxatives or enemas without a doctor. Don't add salt/sugar heavily. Honey only for 1y+.
Care at home
Toilet routine, unhurried time, a footstool for leverage, and consistent fiber+fluids fix most cases. Address stool-withholding gently, not with pressure.

When to see a doctor. Children are not small adults. This guide offers food-first comfort for a parent to consider; it gives no medicines, doses or supplements for children. A paediatrician decides on treatment. When in doubt, go.
