Go to a doctor now if: Drooling with breathing/swallowing difficulty, unable to open mouth, one-sided severe swelling, very high fever, white pus on tonsils with fever (possible strep), rash, or dehydration — see a doctor.
Food-first comfort
Cool soft soothing foods (curd, custard, ice cream in small amounts), warm fluids, honey-warm-water (1y+); salt-water gargle for children who can gargle (5y+); plenty of fluids.
What to nourish
Soft cool and warm foods, hydration, vitamin-C fruit.
Never
No honey under 1y. Don't ignore possible strep (needs a doctor and sometimes antibiotics). No adult throat sprays for young kids.
Care at home
Many tonsillitis cases are viral, but bacterial (strep) needs testing and treatment. Keep the child comfortable and well hydrated and get assessed if unwell.

When to see a doctor. Children are not small adults. This guide offers food-first comfort for a parent to consider; it gives no medicines, doses or supplements for children. A paediatrician decides on treatment. When in doubt, go.
