Go to a doctor now if: Facial pain/swelling, high fever, thick one-sided nasal discharge (possible foreign body in toddlers), symptoms >10 days or worsening after improving, or breathing difficulty — see a doctor.
Food-first comfort
Warm fluids and clear soups to thin mucus; steam from a warm bath or a bowl of hot water (adult holds it, child never alone/close); saline nose drops/rinse to clear the passages; warm turmeric milk at night (2y+); a little honey in warm water (1y+) to soothe the throat; reduce very cold/iced foods and excess sugary dairy if they worsen mucus.
What to nourish
Warm soups, vitamin-C fruit, ginger/tulsi warm sips (older kids), plenty of fluids.
Never
Never leave a child alone with hot water/steam (scald risk). No decongestant sprays/oils under a young child's nose without advice. No OTC cough-cold syrups under 6. No honey under 1 year.
Care at home
Most childhood catarrh/sinus congestion follows a cold and clears with warm fluids, saline and steam. Persistent, one-sided or feverish congestion should be checked.
