Teen Menstrual Cramps - Nutrition & Comfort (Older Girls) in children

Signs: lower-tummy or back cramping, tiredness or mild nausea around monthly periods in adolescent girls

Age: 9 years+ (once periods begin)
Go to a doctor now if: Pain so severe it stops school or daily life, very heavy or long bleeding, periods that suddenly change, fainting, severe pallor/tiredness, or pain with fever - see a doctor; effective help exists and some causes need treatment.

Food-first comfort

Warmth, gentle food and iron support: a warm compress or hot-water bag on the lower tummy eases cramps; warm fluids, ginger tea (mild) or ajwain water may soothe; light, regular meals and steady water; iron-rich foods (dal, greens, jaggery, egg, meat/fish if eaten) with a vitamin-C food across the month to replace what periods lose; gentle movement or a walk can help; cut back on very salty or very sugary foods if bloating bothers her.

What to nourish

Iron foods (dal, greens, jaggery, egg), vitamin-C fruit, whole grains, curd, nuts/seeds, plenty of water and warm fluids.

Never

Don't dismiss severe pain as 'just normal'. Don't give repeated adult painkillers without a doctor's guidance. Avoid unproven 'period' supplements for teens. Don't let heavy bleeding go unchecked (anaemia risk).

Care at home

Mild period cramps are common and warmth, gentle food, hydration and light movement comfort most girls. Iron-rich eating matters across the month. Severe pain or heavy bleeding is not something to just endure - it deserves medical care.
