Puberty Nutrition - Growth Spurt Support (Teens) in children

Signs: preventive topic - the fast-growth teenage years, when appetite, bones and blood needs all rise

Age: 9 years+ (adolescents)
Go to a doctor now if: Growth that seems to stall or is far behind peers, extreme tiredness or pallor (possible iron-deficiency anaemia, common in teen girls), very restrictive or binge eating, fainting, or no periods by mid-teens - see a doctor.

Food-first comfort

Meet rising needs with everyday food: regular balanced meals with enough energy for the growth spurt; iron-rich foods (dal, beans, greens, jaggery, egg, meat/fish if eaten) with a vitamin-C food to help absorption - important for teen girls once periods start; calcium and vitamin-D foods (milk, curd, cheese, ragi, sesame, greens, sunlight) for the bones that lay down most of their strength now; protein at each meal; fruit, vegetables and water; don't skip breakfast.

What to nourish

Dal/beans, egg, milk, curd, cheese, ragi, sesame, leafy greens, jaggery, whole grains, fruit and vegetables; water/milk to drink.

Never

Don't fall for 'height-gain', 'growth' or hormone tonics/supplements for teens - some are unsafe. Don't let teens live on junk food, skip meals or crash-diet during growth. Don't ignore very restrictive eating.

Care at home

Puberty is the body's big building phase, and ordinary iron-, calcium- and protein-rich meals cover it well. Real food beats any tonic; watch for anaemia, disordered eating or growth concerns and get them checked.
