Food-first comfort
Begin at about 6 months alongside continued milk feeds. Start with single, smooth, iron-rich home foods — mashed dal, well-cooked ragi/rice porridge, mashed vegetables (carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato), soft fruit (banana, cooked apple). Introduce ONE new food at a time, a few days apart, watching for any reaction. Progress to soft lumps and finger foods as skills grow.
What to nourish
Iron-rich first foods (dal, ragi, egg yolk later), mashed vegetables and fruit, home-cooked and unsalted; keep breast/formula milk as the main drink through the first year.
Never
Care at home
Weaning is about exploring taste and texture while milk still does most of the nourishing. Go slowly, one food at a time, iron-rich and home-cooked, and let the baby set the pace.
