Nausea & Queasiness (Non-Travel) in children

Signs: a queasy, off-food feeling or mild nausea without much vomiting - from overeating, anxiety, a mild bug or an empty stomach

Age: 1 year+ (persistent vomiting in any child, or any in a baby, needs a doctor)
Go to a doctor now if: Repeated or forceful vomiting, vomiting that is green/bloody, severe or worsening tummy pain, a hard swollen belly, headache with a stiff neck, dehydration, drowsiness, or nausea after a head injury - see a doctor promptly.

Food-first comfort

Settle the stomach gently: small sips of cool water, ORS or coconut water rather than big drinks; plain, dry, bland foods when ready (toast, rice, banana, khichdi, dry roti, plain biscuits); avoid greasy, spicy, very sweet or strong-smelling foods for a while; fresh air and rest; a pinch of roasted jeera or a little ginger (older children) may ease queasiness; eat slowly and don't lie flat straight after.

What to nourish

Cool water/ORS, banana, rice, toast, khichdi, curd, plain bland foods in small amounts.

Never

Don't force food or big drinks onto a queasy child (it triggers vomiting). Don't give adult anti-nausea or motion-sickness medicines without a doctor. Watch hydration if vomiting starts.

Care at home

Passing queasiness usually settles with small sips, bland food, rest and fresh air. Keep an eye on hydration and the tummy pain; persistent vomiting, severe pain or a very unwell child needs medical review.
