Everyday Gut Health - Curd, Fibre & Fluids in children

Signs: preventive topic - keeping a child's digestion regular and comfortable and building healthy eating habits

Age: 1 year+ (curd/dairy from the doctor-guided age for your child)
Go to a doctor now if: Ongoing constipation or diarrhoea, blood in stool, persistent tummy pain, bloating with poor weight gain, or a big unexplained change in bowel habits - see a doctor.

Food-first comfort

Build a happy gut with everyday foods: curd/yoghurt and other fermented foods (idli, dosa batter, buttermilk) for friendly gut bacteria; plenty of fibre from fruit, vegetables, whole grains and dals; enough water through the day; regular meal and toilet routines; a variety of colours on the plate; limit very processed, sugary and fried foods that crowd out fibre. Steady habits, not any single 'super' food, keep digestion regular.

What to nourish

Curd, buttermilk, fermented foods, fruit, vegetables, whole grains, dals/beans, water; a colourful varied plate.

Never

Don't give 'gut cleanse', 'detox' or strong probiotic supplements to children without a doctor. Don't overload with fibre suddenly (space it out with water). Don't replace balanced meals with any single food.

Care at home

A varied diet with curd/fermented foods, plenty of fibre, water and regular routines keeps most children's digestion comfortable and regular. It's about steady everyday habits rather than any supplement; ongoing gut symptoms deserve a check.
