Kitchen remedies
Eat folate-rich foods daily: dark green leafy vegetables (spinach, methi, drumstick/moringa leaves), dals and beans, citrus fruit, beetroot, broccoli and whole grains. Light, quick cooking preserves more folate than long boiling. Moringa (drumstick) leaves are an especially rich traditional source.

Cautions
Do not self-dose high folic-acid supplements, as very high folate can hide a vitamin B12 deficiency (see HR236). Women planning or in early pregnancy need proper antenatal advice on folic acid, since food may not supply enough at that stage.
