Eyelid / Facial Muscle Twitching (Myokymia, supportive)

For: a small, involuntary flutter or twitch of an eyelid or a patch of the face - harmless but annoying, usually brought on by tiredness, stress, too much caffeine, eye strain or low magnesium, and coming and going over days

See a doctor if: Twitching that spreads across one whole side of the face, forces the eye shut, or comes with facial drooping, weakness, double vision or a drooping mouth - see a doctor.

Kitchen remedies

The mainstays are rest and calm: enough sleep; cutting down caffeine (see HR252); resting tired eyes and following the 20-20-20 screen-break habit; warm compresses over a fluttering lid; and magnesium-rich foods (nuts, seeds, greens, bananas - see HR241) which support steady nerve-and-muscle function. Slow breathing and a calming evening routine help settle an over-tired nervous system.

Cautions

An isolated eyelid twitch is almost always harmless and self-limiting. Get it checked if a twitch lasts more than a few weeks, spreads to pull one whole side of the face, closes the eye forcibly, or comes with drooping, weakness or other symptoms - these point to a different nerve condition.

Related remedies

When to see a doctor. Home remedies are for minor, self-limiting complaints in adults. They are not a substitute for medical care, and herbs can interact with medicines. Not for children under the ages stated, in pregnancy, or with chronic conditions without a doctor's advice.
