Bell’s Palsy / Sudden Facial Weakness (supportive, URGENT referral)

For: a sudden weakness or drooping of ONE side of the face - a sagging mouth or brow, an eye that will not close fully, difficulty smiling or eating on that side; it needs same-day medical assessment because early care helps recovery AND because a stroke can look similar

Some research
See a doctor if: If facial drooping comes WITH weakness or numbness of an arm or leg, slurred or lost speech, confusion, a severe sudden headache, or loss of vision - CALL EMERGENCY SERVICES IMMEDIATELY, as this may be a stroke.

Kitchen remedies

FIRST get urgent medical care. Alongside proper treatment, supportive measures ease recovery: protect the eye that will not close (lubricating drops by day, tape or a patch at night) so it does not dry out; gentle warm compresses to the face; slow facial exercises as recovery begins; and rest. Traditional Ayurvedic facial-nerve care (nasya with anu taila, gentle warm-oil facial massage) is used only as an ADJUNCT once a doctor has assessed you.

Featured herbs

Warm compress (supportive), Anu taila [classical nasya oil, uncommon-revival - adjunct], Bala (Sida cordifolia) / Mahanarayan taila [traditional facial massage oil], Sesame oil (gentle massage), Ashwagandha (recovery tonic)

How to prepare

Seek same-day medical care for any sudden one-sided facial weakness. Once assessed, protect the affected eye with lubricating drops in the day and by taping it closed at night, apply gentle warmth to the face, and begin slow facial exercises as movement returns. Any traditional oil massage or nasya is a supportive adjunct after medical review.

Cautions

Sudden facial weakness must be assessed the SAME DAY - early treatment improves the outcome in Bell’s palsy, and the eye must be protected from drying. Do not try to manage it with home measures alone.
