Recovery Nutrition After Illness in children

Signs: a child who is over an infection but is tired, off their food and has lost a little weight or condition

Age: 1 year+ (for babies, feeding recovery is doctor-guided)
Go to a doctor now if: Appetite that doesn't recover after 1-2 weeks, continued weight loss, ongoing tiredness or pallor, a returning fever, or a baby feeding poorly - see a doctor to rule out lingering or new problems.

Food-first comfort

Rebuild gently: start with familiar, easy foods (khichdi, curd rice, banana, soft dal, soups) and step back up to normal meals as appetite returns; offer small, frequent, energy- and protein-rich portions rather than three big plates; keep fluids and curd/yoghurt going for the gut; add fruit, vegetables and an iron-rich food to restore stores after fever; don't force - appetite usually rebounds over a few days to weeks.

What to nourish

Khichdi, dal, curd, milk, egg, soft fruit, vegetables, ghee for energy, iron-rich foods; small frequent meals.

Never

Don't force-feed a recovering child or worry over one or two light days. Don't jump straight to heavy fried food. Avoid 'appetite tonic' or 'weight-gain' supplements for children without a doctor.

Care at home

After an illness, a child's appetite and energy usually bounce back within days to a couple of weeks on small, frequent, nourishing meals. Patience and familiar foods do most of the work; persistent poor eating or weight loss needs a check.
