Ear Wax Build-up / Blocked Ear (mild, supportive)

For: a gradually blocked or full ear with muffled hearing, mild itch, sometimes a faint ringing, from wax build-up

Some research
See a doctor if: Ear pain, discharge, bleeding, sudden or significant hearing loss, spinning dizziness, or wax that stays blocked - see a doctor/nurse for safe removal (syringing or micro-suction)

Kitchen remedies

A few drops of warmed plain oil (sesame, coconut or olive) in the ear for a few nights to soften wax; lie with the treated ear up for a few minutes; let softened wax work its way out on its own; a warm cloth over the ear for comfort; keep ears dry

Featured herbs

Sesame oil (Sesamum indicum) [warmed drops], Coconut oil (Cocos nucifera), Garlic-infused oil (Allium sativum) [traditional, well-strained, body-warm], Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) [oil-infusion tradition]

How to prepare

To soften stubborn wax, warm a little plain oil to body temperature, put two or three drops in the ear at night, and lie with that ear upward for a few minutes. Over a few nights the wax loosens and clears by itself. Never dig with cotton buds, which push wax deeper.

Cautions

Do NOT use oil drops or ear candling if the ear is painful, discharging, or the eardrum may be perforated, or after ear surgery. Never insert cotton buds, hairpins or matchsticks. Diabetics and those with grommets should see a professional for wax removal.

Related remedies

When to see a doctor. Home remedies are for minor, self-limiting complaints in adults. They are not a substitute for medical care, and herbs can interact with medicines. Not for children under the ages stated, in pregnancy, or with chronic conditions without a doctor's advice.
