Winter Dry Cough & Throat Tickle in children

Signs: a dry, tickly night-time cough and scratchy throat in cold, dry weather, without much mucus or fever

Age: 1 year+ (honey remedies 1y+; soothing steam supervised all ages)
Go to a doctor now if: Cough with fever lasting beyond 3 days, wheezing or fast/laboured breathing, coughing up coloured mucus or blood, a cough dragging past 2-3 weeks, or the child seeming unwell - see a doctor.

Food-first comfort

Soothe and moisten: warm water with a little honey and lemon (1y+) before bed - honey is one of the gentlest, best-studied soothers for a child's night cough; warm turmeric milk at night (2y+); plenty of warm fluids and clear soups through the day; steam from a warm bath to moisten the airways; keep the child well hydrated; avoid very cold or iced drinks if they trigger the tickle.

What to nourish

Warm fluids, soups, curd, fruit and normal balanced meals; extra water in dry weather.

Never

No honey under 1 year. Don't give adult or combination cough syrups to young children. Don't ignore a cough that comes with fever, wheeze or breathlessness - that is a different problem.

Care at home

A dry winter cough is usually just irritated airways in dry air. Warm honey drinks and moist air comfort most children through it; watch for fever or breathing changes that point to something more.
