Teen Acne - Skin Nutrition & Gentle Hygiene in children

Signs: pimples, blackheads, whiteheads or oily skin on the face, chest or back around puberty

Age: 10 years+ (adolescents)
Go to a doctor now if: Severe, painful, cystic or scarring acne, acne with distress or low mood, or breakouts with unusual hair growth or irregular periods in girls - see a doctor or dermatologist, as effective medical treatments exist.

Food-first comfort

Support clearer skin from the inside and outside: a balanced whole-food diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and water; some teens notice fewer breakouts when they cut back on very sugary foods, sugary drinks and a lot of skimmed-milk/whey - worth observing with a simple diary; omega-rich foods (walnut, flax, fish if eaten); gentle twice-daily washing with a mild cleanser (not harsh scrubbing); a clean pillowcase and not squeezing spots.

What to nourish

Vegetables, fruit, whole grains, dal/beans, nuts and seeds, omega-3 foods, plenty of water; less added sugar and sugary drinks.

Never

Don't scrub hard, over-wash or use many strong products at once (it irritates skin). Don't squeeze or pick deep spots (scarring risk). Don't chase crash diets. Avoid unproven 'skin detox' supplements for teens without a doctor.

Care at home

Teen acne is a normal part of hormonal change and improves with gentle care, a balanced diet and patience. Diet is a supportive piece, not the whole story - moderate-to-severe or scarring acne deserves proper dermatology care to prevent lasting marks.
