Dandruff & Flaky Scalp (Older Children) in children

Signs: white or greyish flakes in the hair and on the shoulders, sometimes with a mildly itchy scalp

Age: 3 years+ (for cradle cap in babies see CHR018)
Go to a doctor now if: A very red, weepy, crusted or intensely itchy scalp, bald patches or broken hairs (possible fungal infection), spreading rash, or flaking that doesn't settle with gentle care - see a doctor.

Food-first comfort

Gentle scalp care plus nourishing food: regular washing with a mild shampoo to lift flakes; warming a little coconut oil into the scalp an hour before washing can loosen scale and ease itch; a balanced diet with omega-rich foods, fruit, vegetables and enough water supports healthy skin; avoid harsh, daily hot-water washing that dries the scalp.

What to nourish

Omega-3 foods (walnut/flax, fish if eaten), fruit, vegetables, whole grains, water; a varied diet for healthy skin.

Never

Don't scratch or pick the scalp raw. Don't use adult anti-dandruff medicated shampoos on a young child without advice. Don't wash with very hot water daily (it worsens dryness).

Care at home

Mild dandruff in older children is common and usually settles with gentle washing and scalp oiling. Persistent, very itchy or patchy scalp problems can be fungal or eczema-related and are worth a doctor's look.
