Skin Chafing / Intertrigo (supportive)

For: red, raw, stinging or sore skin where surfaces rub - inner thighs, underarms, under the breasts or skin folds, worse with heat and sweat

Some research
See a doctor if: Weeping, foul-smelling or pus-filled skin, spreading redness, fever, a white cheesy coating (yeast), or folds that keep breaking down in someone with diabetes - see a doctor

Kitchen remedies

Keep the area clean, cool and dry; wear soft breathable cotton; barrier of coconut oil or plain petroleum jelly before activity; a light dusting to absorb moisture; cool compress and rest for raw skin; lose friction (better-fitting clothes)

Featured herbs

Coconut oil (Cocos nucifera) [barrier/soothing], Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) [cooling gel], Turmeric (Curcuma longa) [antiseptic, healing], Neem (Azadirachta indica) [if any infection], Sandalwood [cooling paste]

How to prepare

Cool and clean the sore area, pat fully dry, and let it breathe. Apply aloe or coconut oil to soothe and protect; a barrier balm before exercise prevents rubbing. Keep skin folds dry with a light natural dusting. Choose soft, well-fitting cotton to remove the friction causing it.

Cautions

Raw skin folds can grow yeast/bacteria if kept warm and moist - keep them dry. Avoid heavy occlusive layers on already-infected weeping skin. Recurrent intertrigo is common with diabetes/obesity and benefits from addressing the underlying cause.
