Kitchen remedies
Keep the nose lining moist: a dab of ghee, coconut oil or plain petroleum jelly just inside the nostrils twice a day; humidify dry/heated rooms; stay well hydrated; cooling foods and drinks in summer (coconut water, amla, coriander water); avoid nose-picking and forceful blowing; for an active bleed, sit up, lean forward and pinch the soft nose for 10 minutes
Featured herbs
Ghee / clarified butter [nasal moisture, traditional], Coconut oil (Cocos nucifera), Amla (Phyllanthus emblica) [vitamin C, cooling], Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) [cooling water], Sandalwood (Santalum album) [cooling forehead paste], Durva/Doob grass (Cynodon dactylon) [uncommon, traditional cooling juice]
How to prepare
To reduce repeat nosebleeds, stop the lining drying and cracking: smear a little ghee, coconut oil or petroleum jelly just inside each nostril morning and night, and humidify dry rooms. Keep cool and hydrated in summer with coconut water and amla. If a bleed starts, sit up, lean forward and pinch the soft part of the nose steadily for ten minutes.
Cautions
These are gentle prevention and simple first-aid measures. Do NOT tilt the head back during a bleed. Frequent or heavy nosebleeds, or bleeding while on blood thinners, need medical assessment. Avoid inserting anything hard into the nose.
