Probiotic / Gut-Flora Restoration after Antibiotics (supportive)

For: the loose stools, bloating, wind or upset that can follow a course of antibiotics, which disturb the helpful gut bacteria; the aim is to gently help the friendly flora recover

Some research
See a doctor if: Severe or bloody diarrhoea, high fever, severe abdominal pain, signs of dehydration, or diarrhoea lasting more than 2 days after antibiotics - see a doctor (a specific gut infection may need treatment).

Kitchen remedies

Reintroduce traditional fermented and probiotic foods gradually: fresh home-set curd and buttermilk (chaas), idli and dosa batter, fermented kanji, and small amounts of naturally fermented pickles. Add gentle prebiotic foods that feed good bacteria - banana, garlic, onion, oats and cooked-then-cooled rice. Keep well hydrated and eat light, easily digested meals while the gut settles.

Featured herbs

Fresh curd / dahi, Buttermilk / Chaas, Idli & dosa (fermented), Kanji, Banana (prebiotic), Ginger & jeera (settling), a little garlic (prebiotic)

How to prepare

Once the antibiotic course is finished, bring back a bowl of fresh curd or a glass of buttermilk each day, and add lightly fermented foods gradually. Include banana and other gentle prebiotic foods, drink enough water, and keep meals light until the digestion feels normal again.

Cautions

Always FINISH the antibiotic course your doctor prescribed - probiotic foods support recovery but do not replace it. People who are seriously ill or have a weak immune system should check before taking concentrated probiotic supplements.
