Oil Pulling / Kavala Daily Oral Wellness (traditional practice)

For: a traditional daily mouth-care practice (Kavala/Gandusha) many use to freshen the mouth, support clean gums and teeth and reduce morning bad breath - a complement to, not a replacement for, brushing

See a doctor if: Persistent bad breath despite good oral care, bleeding, swollen or receding gums, loose teeth, a mouth ulcer that will not heal in 2-3 weeks, or tooth pain - see a dentist.

Kitchen remedies

First thing in the morning, before eating, take about a tablespoon of oil (cold-pressed sesame or coconut) into the mouth and swish it gently between the teeth and around the gums for a few minutes, building up to about 10 minutes. Do not swallow it. Spit it into a bin (not the sink, as oil can clog drains), rinse the mouth with warm water, and then brush as usual. A pinch of triphala or a clove in the oil adds a traditional astringent-antimicrobial note.

How to prepare

Cautions

Oil pulling is a supportive mouth-freshening practice - it does NOT replace daily brushing, flossing and dental check-ups, and will not remove established decay, tartar or gum disease. Never swallow the used oil, and do not let children who cannot reliably spit try it (risk of choking/inhaling oil).

Related remedies

When to see a doctor. Home remedies are for minor, self-limiting complaints in adults. They are not a substitute for medical care, and herbs can interact with medicines. Not for children under the ages stated, in pregnancy, or with chronic conditions without a doctor's advice.
