Nail Fungus / Onychomycosis (mild, supportive)

For: thickened, discoloured (yellow-white/brown) crumbly or brittle finger- or toe-nail, sometimes lifting from the bed

Traditional use
See a doctor if: Spreading infection, pain, redness/swelling of the toe, diabetes or poor circulation, or no improvement after a few months — see a doctor (oral antifungals may be needed)

Kitchen remedies

Keep nails dry, short and clean; wear breathable footwear and change socks; tea-tree oil; neem oil; diluted vinegar soaks; garlic; a turmeric paste on the nail; disinfect nail tools

Featured herbs

Tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) [diluted, antifungal], Neem (Azadirachta indica) [oil], Turmeric (Curcuma longa), Garlic (Allium sativum), Camphor [traditional, external only]

How to prepare

Clean and file the nail, then apply diluted tea-tree or neem oil to the nail and surrounding skin twice daily; a turmeric paste is a traditional adjunct. Keep feet dry and aired. Nail fungus is slow — expect months as the healthy nail grows out.

Cautions

Topical measures are slow and often incomplete for nail fungus. Dilute essential oils and patch-test. People with diabetes or poor circulation should have any foot-nail problem checked rather than self-treating.

Related remedies

When to see a doctor. Home remedies are for minor, self-limiting complaints in adults. They are not a substitute for medical care, and herbs can interact with medicines. Not for children under the ages stated, in pregnancy, or with chronic conditions without a doctor's advice.
