Morning Body Stiffness / Vata Stiffness (supportive)

For: a general stiffness of the body and joints on waking or after sitting still for a while, that eases once you get moving and warm up - common with age, cold weather and a sedentary day, distinct from the pain of a single sore joint

See a doctor if: Joint stiffness lasting over an hour each morning, hot swollen joints, marked deformity, fever with joint pain, or stiffness with numbness or weakness - see a doctor.

Kitchen remedies

Warmth and gentle movement are the key: a warm self-oil massage (abhyanga) before a warm bath or shower loosens the body; light morning stretches, joint circles and a short walk; warming, easy-to-digest food and warm drinks rather than cold, raw and heavy meals; a little dry ginger, ajwain or a pinch of ginger-turmeric in warm water; and keeping the joints warm in cold weather. Castor oil and warming herbal oils are traditional for morning stiffness.

Cautions

Ordinary stiffness that loosens within a few minutes of moving is usually benign and helped by warmth and activity. Morning stiffness that lasts more than an hour, or comes with swollen, hot or visibly inflamed joints, can signal an inflammatory arthritis and needs a medical assessment rather than home care alone.
