Low Stomach Acid / Sluggish Digestion (older adults, supportive)

For: a heavy, over-full feeling long after eating, with belching, bloating, poor appetite and food that seems to "sit" undigested - more common with age, when the stomach's digestive strength can weaken (the opposite of the burning of excess acidity)

See a doctor if: Difficulty or pain swallowing, unintended weight loss, repeated vomiting, black or bloody stools, a lump in the abdomen, or persistent new indigestion after age 45 - see a doctor.

Kitchen remedies

Support the stomach's natural digestive strength: eat smaller, warm, well-cooked meals and chew thoroughly; take a few sips of warm water with a squeeze of lemon or a little ginger 10-15 minutes before food to prime digestion; use warming digestive spices (ajwain, jeera, ginger, black pepper, hing) in cooking; a small piece of ginger with a pinch of rock salt before meals kindles appetite; and walk gently after eating. Avoid drowning the meal in cold water and heavy late-night eating.

Cautions

These measures gently support a sluggish digestion, but persistent indigestion in an older adult should never be assumed harmless. New, ongoing or worsening indigestion, especially with weight loss, difficulty or pain on swallowing, vomiting, black stools or anaemia, must be investigated by a doctor to rule out a serious cause. People on acid-reducing medicines should not stop them without advice.

Related remedies
