Kitchen remedies
Warm salt-water foot soaks to soften the skin and ease soreness; after soaking, gently lift the nail edge and tuck a wisp of clean cotton beneath it; keep feet clean and dry; wear roomy, open shoes; a dab of turmeric-coconut paste as an antiseptic; always trim nails straight across, not curved
Featured herbs
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) [antiseptic paste], Neem (Azadirachta indica) [antimicrobial soak], Coconut oil (Cocos nucifera), Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) [well diluted, antimicrobial], Epsom / rock salt [soak]
How to prepare
Soak the foot in warm salted (or neem-leaf) water for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times a day. Dry well, gently ease the nail corner up and place a tiny piece of clean cotton to lift it off the skin, then dab on a little turmeric-coconut paste. Cut nails straight across as they grow out.
Cautions
Do not dig out or cut the nail corner deeply - this worsens the ingrowth and invites infection. People with diabetes or poor circulation should NOT self-treat foot problems and must see a professional early (see HR235).
