Kitchen remedies
Never pull or bite a hangnail - snip it cleanly with clean nail scissors; soak fingertips in warm water then massage in oil; moisturise regularly, especially after washing; wear gloves for wet or harsh work; a warm-oil soak for nails and cuticles at bedtime
Featured herbs
Coconut oil (Cocos nucifera), Sesame oil (Sesamum indicum), Almond oil (Prunus amygdalus) [nail-cuticle nourishing], Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis), Neem oil (Azadirachta indica) [if any redness]
How to prepare
Soak the fingertips in warm water for a few minutes, then trim any hangnail cleanly at its base - do not tear it. Massage coconut, sesame or almond oil into the nails and cuticles, especially at bedtime. Moisturise the hands after every wash, and wear gloves for cleaning and dishwashing.
Cautions
Biting or ripping hangnails opens the skin to infection. Keep the area clean if the skin has torn.
