Fever in Children (supportive care, referral)

For: a warm/hot child who is more tired or fussy than usual, with a raised temperature

Some research
See a doctor if: Any fever in a baby under 3 months; fever with a rash that does not fade under pressure, stiff neck, drowsiness, fits, breathing difficulty, non-stop crying, refusing fluids, dry nappies, or fever lasting >3 days - urgent medical care

Kitchen remedies

Plenty of fluids in small sips (water, coconut water, diluted juices, ORS if needed); light clothing and a comfortable room; tepid (not cold) sponging for comfort; rest; easy foods like khichdi, soups and fruit when hungry; breast milk continues for babies

Featured herbs

Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) [mild, warm infusion], Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) [cooling seed water], Giloy/Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) [uncommon, older children only], Ginger (Zingiber officinale) [very mild], Sandalwood [cooling forehead paste]

How to prepare

Keep the child cool, calm and well-hydrated with frequent small drinks. Dress lightly and sponge with tepid water for comfort. A mild tulsi or coriander-seed infusion is a gentle traditional support for older children. Let the child rest and eat what they can.

Cautions

Supportive comfort only. Never give aspirin to a child. Use any medicine (e.g. paracetamol) only per a doctor/pharmacist and the child's weight. Herbs like giloy are for older children, not infants. Watch hydration closely.

Related remedies

When to see a doctor. Home remedies are for minor, self-limiting complaints in adults. They are not a substitute for medical care, and herbs can interact with medicines. Not for children under the ages stated, in pregnancy, or with chronic conditions without a doctor's advice.
