Denture Soreness / Gum Irritation (supportive)

For: sore spots, tender gums or mild ulcers under or around dentures, discomfort when eating

Traditional use
See a doctor if: A mouth sore/ulcer that does not heal in 2-3 weeks, a lump, white/red patch, bleeding, or spreading pain/swelling — see a dentist or doctor (persistent oral ulcers must be checked)

Kitchen remedies

Warm salt-water rinses; remove dentures overnight and clean daily; aloe vera gel on sore spots; clove oil dab for pain; chamomile or triphala mouth rinse; soft foods while gums heal

Featured herbs

Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) [oil, temporary relief], Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis), Triphala [uncommon oral rinse], Yashtimadhu/Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) [soothing], Turmeric (Curcuma longa) [rinse]

How to prepare

Rinse with warm salt water 2-3x/day and after meals. Dab a little diluted clove oil or aloe on the sore spot for relief. Leave dentures out overnight to rest the gums and clean them well. A triphala or turmeric rinse soothes and freshens. Get an ill-fitting denture adjusted.

Cautions

Comfort measures only. A denture sore that keeps recurring in the same spot usually means the denture needs adjusting. Clove oil is for short-term topical use, not swallowing.
