Chronic Throat Clearing / Post-nasal Drip (supportive)

For: a constant need to clear the throat, a lump-in-throat feeling, and mucus trickling from the back of the nose, often worse in the morning

Some research
See a doctor if: A lump/hoarseness lasting over 3 weeks, difficulty swallowing, coughing blood, unexplained weight loss, or a persistent one-sided blocked nose - see a doctor

Kitchen remedies

Warm fluids and good hydration to thin mucus; saline nasal rinse morning and evening; steam inhalation; honey with warm water or a warm turmeric drink; reduce dairy, cold drinks and very late meals if they seem to worsen it; avoid throat-clearing force - sip water instead

Featured herbs

Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Mulethi/Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) [demulcent], Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Turmeric (Curcuma longa) [warm milk], Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) [steam], Trikatu [uncommon, warming - small amounts]

How to prepare

Thin and clear the mucus rather than scraping the throat: rinse the nose with saline twice a day, take steam, and keep sipping warm fluids. A warm honey-and-turmeric or mulethi drink soothes the throat lining. Notice and reduce any trigger foods (cold drinks, excess dairy, late heavy meals).

Cautions

Supportive only. Persistent throat-clearing can come from reflux, allergy or sinus issues that need proper assessment. Mulethi/licorice is not for long daily use or in high blood pressure. Do not give honey to a child under 1 year.

Related remedies

When to see a doctor. Home remedies are for minor, self-limiting complaints in adults. They are not a substitute for medical care, and herbs can interact with medicines. Not for children under the ages stated, in pregnancy, or with chronic conditions without a doctor's advice.
