Caffeine Cutting-Down / Coffee & Energy-Drink Dependence (supportive)

For: relying on several cups of coffee, strong tea, colas or energy drinks to get through the day, then feeling jittery, anxious, poor-sleeping or headachy - and getting a dull headache and low mood when a dose is missed

See a doctor if: Palpitations, chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, severe anxiety or fainting linked to caffeine or energy drinks - stop them and see a doctor.

Kitchen remedies

Cut down gradually rather than all at once to ease the withdrawal headache: drop one cup every few days, or half-mix caffeinated with decaf. Swap in warming, caffeine-free drinks - roasted-chicory "coffee", tulsi (holy basil) tea, ginger or fennel tea, warm turmeric milk. Keep well hydrated, since some tiredness is simple dehydration, and take a short walk or a few deep breaths for the natural lift you were chasing.

Anyone with palpitations, marked anxiety or a heart rhythm problem should reduce caffeine with medical advice. Energy drinks in particular can be high in caffeine and sugar and are best avoided by children, pregnant women and people with heart conditions.
