Kitchen remedies
Wear wide, soft, low-heeled shoes with room for the toes; a cushioning pad or toe-spacer over the bump; a warm Epsom-salt foot soak for aching; anti-inflammatory foods such as turmeric and ginger; gentle toe stretches and foot exercises; and a soothing warm-oil massage around the joint.
Featured herbs
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) [golden milk], Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Epsom / rock salt [soak], Nirgundi (Vitex negundo) [uncommon-revival, joint oil], Mahanarayan taila [classical massage oil]
How to prepare
Switch to wide, cushioned footwear and use a toe-spacer or padding over the bump to ease rubbing. Soak the feet in warm Epsom-salt water when they ache and massage gently around the joint with warm nirgundi or mahanarayan oil. Do simple toe stretches daily and take turmeric milk in the evening.
Cautions
A bunion is a change in the bone and joint - roomy footwear, padding and exercises ease the discomfort but will not straighten it. People with diabetes should have any foot problem looked at professionally (see HR235) rather than self-treating.
