Kitchen remedies
Gentle hygiene with plain warm water (no soap or hard rubbing); pat completely dry; loose cotton underwear; a cool compress for relief; more fibre and water to keep stools soft; plain curd in the diet; ease off very spicy food, excess coffee and citrus if they seem to make it worse; a little coconut oil to soothe

Cautions
Do not use soap, perfumed wipes or leftover steroid creams without advice - they often make it worse. Scratching breaks the skin and prolongs it. In children a common cause is threadworm (see HR198). Diabetics and anyone with ongoing itching should be reviewed.
