Air Pollution / Smog Cough & Throat Irritation (supportive)

For: dry cough, scratchy or irritated throat, watery eyes and a stuffy nose on high-pollution or smoky days, often worse outdoors

Well-studied
See a doctor if: Breathlessness, chest tightness or wheeze, coughing blood, a cough lasting more than 3 weeks, or worsening of known asthma/COPD/heart disease - see a doctor

Kitchen remedies

Warm fluids through the day (water, tulsi or ginger tea, soups); steam inhalation to clear the airways; saline nasal rinse or drops; honey with warm water for a scratchy throat; vitamin-C-rich fruit (amla, citrus, guava); stay indoors and use a mask on very smoky days

Featured herbs

Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) [warm infusion], Mulethi/Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) [throat soother], Vasaka/Adhatoda (Justicia adhatoda) [uncommon, traditional bronchial herb], Amla (Phyllanthus emblica) [vitamin C], Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Turmeric (Curcuma longa) [warm milk]

How to prepare

On smoky or high-AQI days, keep the airways moist: sip warm tulsi or ginger tea, take a steam inhalation once or twice, and rinse the nose with saline. A little honey in warm water soothes a raw throat. Amla and citrus support the body through the day. Reduce outdoor exertion.

Cautions

Supportive comfort only; it does not remove the underlying cause, which is air quality. People with asthma, COPD or heart disease should follow their prescribed medicines and action plan and not rely on home measures. Do not give honey to a child under 1 year.
