Adult Seborrhoeic Dermatitis / Facial & Scalp Flaking (supportive)

For: greasy yellowish flaking and mild redness on oil-rich areas - the sides of the nose, eyebrows, hairline, ears and scalp - that tends to come and go and often flares with stress, cold weather or tiredness

See a doctor if: Rapidly spreading redness, weeping, crusting or pain (possible infection), a severe or widespread rash, or flaking with hair loss or in a baby - see a doctor or dermatologist.

Kitchen remedies

Keep the skin gently clean - a mild, non-stripping wash, patting dry rather than scrubbing; a little honey (a natural, soothing humectant) smoothed on the flaky patch for 10-15 minutes then rinsed; cooled aloe-vera gel to calm redness; on the scalp, a warm oil with neem massaged an hour before washing to lift the scale. Include zinc and good-fat foods (see HR240, HR242) and manage stress and sleep, which strongly influence flares.

How to prepare

Cautions

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a long-term, relapsing tendency that eases and returns - home care calms flares but does not remove the tendency. Always dilute and patch-test bakuchi and neem, as concentrated forms can irritate; bakuchi can increase sun sensitivity, so avoid strong sun on treated skin. Stop anything that stings or worsens the rash.
