Aching / Tired Feet from Standing (supportive)

For: sore, tired, aching feet and soles after long standing or walking, sometimes with mild swelling by evening, common in people who work on their feet

Some research
See a doctor if: Painful swelling of one calf or leg, redness and warmth, chest pain or breathlessness, numbness, or a non-healing foot in a person with diabetes - seek medical care.

Kitchen remedies

Rest with the feet raised; a warm Epsom-salt foot soak; a soothing foot massage with warm oil; supportive, cushioned footwear and a change of shoes during long shifts; simple foot and calf stretches; rolling the sole over a cool bottle; enough fluids to reduce swelling

Featured herbs

Epsom / rock salt [soak], Sesame oil (Sesamum indicum) [warm massage], Nirgundi (Vitex negundo) [uncommon-revival, ache-easing oil], Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Camphor + coconut oil [cooling rub]

How to prepare

In the evening soak the feet in warm water with a handful of Epsom or rock salt for about 15 minutes, then massage the soles and calves with warm sesame or nirgundi oil and put the feet up for a while. Wear cushioned, well-fitting shoes and change footwear during long shifts.

Cautions

Ongoing foot pain, or pain focused on the heel (see plantar fasciitis) or the ball of the foot, may need supportive insoles or assessment. Sudden painful swelling of one leg is a different, urgent problem.
