Screen-Tired Eyes / Eye Strain - Rest & Nutrition in children

Signs: tired, dry or achy eyes, blinking, rubbing, headaches or blurring after long screen or close-up time

Age: 3 years+
Go to a doctor now if: Persistent blurring, squinting, sitting very close, frequent headaches, one eye turning, eye pain, redness or light sensitivity, or falling behind at school from not seeing well - see an eye doctor for a proper vision check.

Food-first comfort

Rest the eyes and feed them well: the 20-20-20 habit (every 20 minutes, look far away for 20 seconds), regular screen breaks and outdoor daylight play (which genuinely helps young eyes); eye-friendly foods rich in vitamin A and antioxidants - carrot, pumpkin, papaya, mango, leafy greens, egg - plus plenty of water to keep eyes moist; good lighting for reading/homework and holding screens/books at a comfortable distance.

What to nourish

Carrot, pumpkin, papaya, mango, leafy greens, egg, dairy and colourful fruit/vegetables; plenty of water.

Never

Don't use eye drops in a child's eyes without a doctor. Don't ignore persistent squinting, headaches or a child sitting very close to screens/books. Don't rely on food to fix a vision problem that needs glasses.

Care at home

Tired eyes from screens ease with breaks, outdoor daylight and eye-friendly food. But these habits don't correct a refractive error - persistent squinting, headaches or sitting-too-close signs mean it's time for an eye test.
