Early Tooth Decay Prevention - Diet & Hygiene in children

Signs: preventive topic - white or brown spots on teeth, or simply wanting to protect a young child's teeth

Age: 1 year+ (tooth-cleaning from the first tooth)
Go to a doctor now if: White, brown or black marks on the teeth, tooth pain, sensitivity, a hole, swelling of the gum or face, or a knocked/broken tooth - see a dentist; early decay in baby teeth needs treatment.

Food-first comfort

Protect teeth mostly through what and when children eat: water and milk as the everyday drinks (not juice or sweet drinks in a bottle or sipper); keep sweets, biscuits, dried fruit and sugary drinks to mealtimes rather than constant grazing; finish meals with cheese, curd or a crunchy vegetable/fruit; never send a baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice; offer calcium-rich foods (milk, curd, cheese, ragi, sesame, greens) for strong teeth; clean teeth twice daily.

What to nourish

Milk, curd, cheese, ragi, leafy greens, sesame, crunchy fruit and vegetables, water as the main drink.

Never

Never put a baby to bed with a bottle of milk, juice or any sweet drink. Don't give sugary drinks in a bottle/sipper for constant sipping. Don't dip dummies in honey or sugar (and no honey under 1 year). Don't skip the bedtime brush.

Care at home

Baby teeth matter - they hold space and shape eating and speech. Steady habits (water not sweet drinks, sweets at mealtimes only, twice-daily brushing and dental check-ups) protect them far more than any single food.
